A woman has gone on trial in America after being accused of bullying a young girl online resulting in her taking her own life. 49-year old Lori Drew allegedly posed as a sixteen year old boy on the website MySpace and befriended the young girl in a bid to humiliate her. Megan Meier was only thirteen years of age when her virtual relationship ended in disaster.

Megan Meier was friends with the daughter of the accused before falling out as kids often do. Lori Drew decided to take it upon herself to humiliate the young girl, and made up the fictional boy Josh on MySpace. Prosecutors have said the Ms. Drew has violated the terms set out by MySpace which prohibit users from using fake registration information as well as using the site to harass other members.

Young Megan Meier killed herself in 2006, believed to be because of the horrible messages her ‘friend’ Josh wrote to her on the internet. In his opening statement, the prosecutor of the case said the evidence showed that Ms Drew opened the online account and “fully intended to hurt and prey on Megan’s psyche”.
“Her purpose was to tease Megan Meier, to tease her, to humiliate her and to hurt her,” he said. One of the messages said that the world would be a better place without Megan in it. How can an adult, a grown woman take it upon herself to harass a young and innocent girl causing her to take her own life? What are your thoughts?
